Imam Al-Ghazali (Abu Hamid Ghazali R.A) (1058-1111) ranks among the greatest of Muslim thinkers. A jurist and theologian, he is regarded as a pivotal figure in Islamic History and a Reviver of the age. Ghazali and Prayer is the first extensive study of Ghazali's theory of prayer (dhikr and du'a), and demonstrates their significance and application in the daily program of divine offices (wird); it also shows that this mystical program, which its variations, was intended for all Muslims. Kojiro Nakamura is Professor of Islamic Studies at Obirin University and Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo. He has authored many books on the history of Islamic thought in Japanese and English. Ghazali on Invocations and Supplications is an English translation of selections taken from Ghazali's major work, Ihya Ulum al-Din.
